What drives a creative environment?

Our Stuff / posted by in 29 Jul of 2013

It’s no secret that our routine here at the studio is more relaxed than in other workplaces. Just like uncle Ben taguht us, “With great powers comes great responsibilities” – and that’s the vibe that we build a pulsing work environment.

In this post, I share with you simple golden rules that we apply in the house since  forever. These rules make all the difference when you’re working with creativity.

By the way, I’m not talking about physical environment . It was already there in another post. I speak about organization, customs, practices. And, of course, generating results.

liberté

1)      The power of  Liberté!

Make yourself at home. Not so at home at the point of wearing nothing but underwear, obviously, but the point to feel free to be and act. The feeling of not being enclosed makes the mind more lightweight, loose and free to fly by into unkown horizon. (Oh!) Freedom is necessary to increase your knowledge: Read, search, get inspired, it’s all part of a process.

What helps freedom?

An unlocked internet: Facebook, twitter, tumblr, porn, everything for everybody.

Ping-pong table: when the job  stresses you,  when the software is rendering or when the sight begins to tire, make some exercise and allow yourself to shake your body, distract the mind from worries and have some fun. This will charge your batteries again, so you can even beat a Window’s bug.

Comprehensive and flexible hours: We were able to set the best hours for the whole studio. You can deal with costumer, beat the traffic, work continuously without the lunch break and still roll a bit more in bed or have a period to pay some bills. Each team has its rhythm. But when the hours are comprehensive to the crew, everything flows better.

égalité

2)      Thw power of Egalié!

Feel free to expose your ideas: interact, give feedback, ask for feedback. But that only happens when you surround yourself with experienced , positive and open-minded people. Do not be afraid to learn from others, and not be afraid to teach others.

This conversation doensn’t need to be closed only for people of the same area/expertise. Here at the studio, this equality between this different blend of expertise is what generates our holy grail. When people are willing to listen and add the knowledge of others, everything flows better.

What helps the equality?

An open environment: let all under one roof. This stimulates conversation, the exchange of ideas and reduces the distance between people.

A table without stalls: In some way stalls are cool – when you need to focus on practice. But headphones can help you as well. There are several solutions out there: tables with wheels, so you can move your spot wherever you want; a large unique table…

And above all, create a culture of conversation between people.

fraternité

3)      The power of Fraternité!

Feel with the guys. Create a pure engagement team spirit.

The notion of collective responsibility -where you feel free to ask your college about his part because yours depends of it, although both works hard for the best – gets natural and very positive. One must have confidence in the ability of the other, and thus creates a strong relationship work.

What helps the power of brotherhood?

A social moment: happy hour can help reduce the distance between people and create more effective linkages. Although they are different spheres – social and professional – no human being lives foronly  one sphere alone.

These powers only make sense when people of this environment has an open mind, for thus it is willing to learn from the classmate.

And above all, these powers can only produce results when the words of uncle Ben are written deep in our hearts.
