Seis mitos sobre criatividade

Today we’re going to talk about a tabu for 90% of the market. The business creativity is still a misterious field where old myths are stronger than truth. In the creative industry, where our Cafundó Studio is inserted, some concepts are pretty well resolved, but not that much. There are big questions yet to be aswered: Where the good ideas come from? What kind of work envirolment do great ideas spread better? What leaders can do to stimulate creativity without chaos?

I’ll tell you about Teresa Amabile’s research in the area. She’s been researching for over 30 years and now she heads the Entrepreneurial Management Unit at Harvard Business School and is one of the only ones who are driving investigations of creativity for business innovation.

The research Teresa Amabile had done lasted 8 years. During all this time they Amabile and her team have collected nearly 12,000 daily journal entries from 238 people working on creative projects in seven companies in the consumer products, high-tech, and chemical industries. She didn’t tell the study participants that she was focusing on creativity. She simply asked them, in a daily email, about their work and their work environment as they experienced it that day. She then coded the emails for creativity by looking for moments when people struggled with a problem or came up with a new idea.

Take some popcorn, sit down and let’s beat some creative myths together right here and right now:


Ask a leader, manager or the baker next door: “Where in your company you want creativity?” and they will answer: “R&D, marketing, of course.” Now if you ask them where you do not wat creativity, they will answer quickly: “Accounting”

There is a comum sense that some people are creative and some people are not. And that’s not true

They have researched enough to tell that normal people with avereage intelligence is capable of doing some degree of creative work. If we put some prehequisite that would be: experience, both knowlodge and technical skill, talent, an ability to think in new ways; and the capacity to push through uncreative dry spells. Intrinsic motivation — people who are turned on by their work often work creatively — is especially critical.

Yes, people have been talking about creativy in business more and more. But Amabile believes that people are still far behind their true creative potencial, and that’s just because the envirolment impedes instrinct motivation. Companies still have a long way to go to remove the barriers to creativity.


Money is everything, but not everything.  That’s what the research suggests. When you ask people “To what extent were you motivated by rewards today?” Quite often they’d say that the question isn’t relevant — that they don’t think about pay on a day-to-day basis.

Of course, people need to feel that they’re being compensated fairly But the research shows that people put far more value on a work environment where creativity is supported, valued, and recognized. People want the opportunity to deeply engage in their work and make real progress. If the challenge is far beyond their skill level, they tend to get frustrated; if it’s far below their skill level, they tend to get bored. Leaders need to strike the right balance.


-NOT. When the research team asked people about it, they oftenly thought of themselves more creative when time was short. But the research shows that’s not true. It’s quite the opposite, they could be more creative when there wasn’t pressure. In fact, they found a kind of time-pressure hangover — when people were working under great pressure, their creativity went down not only on that day but the next two days as well.
