Here at Cafundó we are always looking for various types of digital media. We’ve had a flirtation with applications for tablets and phones, so we decided to analyze how is the market for this media here in Brazil.

Recently appeared on Apple’s website the news that the iTunes Store reached the number twenty-five billion downloads. This number reflects the global demand for this market. According to Apple, its App Store now has 550,000 applications for sale, and 170,000 natives to iPad. Brazil, despite having a large presence of users in social networks, produces only 1.4% of applications in the world. Experts point out some factors to explain the poor performance in the domestic market, such as lack of skilled labor and low investment in the sector compared to countries like South Korea or the United States for example.

Within the country, production is fairly decentralized, with emphasis on the Southeast, where the three cities are producing applications in the country: Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. Rounding out the ranking of the 10 cities are producing: Recife, Curitiba, Brasilia, Salvador, Joao Pessoa, Fortaleza and Porto Alegre.

Developers prioritize the production of national applications to IOS system (Apple), even with the growth of Android. The wide public acceptance of the system with the iTunes Apple justifies this choice. It also draws attention to the fact that the developers of applications in Brazil depend on the demand for large companies to survive, such as Petrobras, Skol and McDonald’s. Investing in standalone applications to be sold for $ 1 may be interesting, but does not generate large profits.

A case was known within the production of independent applications. Pedro Henrique Franceschi was just a kid cracked in games when he created, to 12 years old, the first application in the world able to unlock your iPod touch in order to run other software on the device. At age 14 he gives lectures on the mobile market and works within a company as a developer.

Worldwide the great success of 2011 was the game Angry Birds, which is not sold in the App Store Brazil, and received a new version last month with the right to launch a world made by direct astronaut space station and got the ten million mark downloads in just three days.

The mobile applications are already being consumed voraciously by the users of smartphones and tablets, and Brazil has the potential to be one of the largest producers and consumers of games and applications in the world. Therefore, this market can be a great opportunity for anyone who can invest in it and have the creativity needed to stand out among the mass.
